What is a Kook you ask? Well The Urban Dictionary describes it as a term most often used by aggro locals, to describe any surfer:
• Who pretends they can surf when, in reality, they suck-ass.
• Who poses very hard as a surfer or skateboarder.
• Who goes to every surfing or skateboarding event to hangout, compile pictures, start conversations, and generally be seen with real surfers or skateboarders.
Let’s face it…..most of us new to the wakeboarding scene fit this description perfectly. So we though it would be appropriate to start a competition to get all the newbies from ‘Kook’ to ‘Ultimate Shredder ‘status.
On Sunday 4th March 2017, StokeCity gave birth to the first ‘King Of The Kooks’ competition. The rules were simple, all entrants must be bonified Kooks, not able to throw more than two inverts, and pay the50 bucks entry with the winner taking 80% of the pot, and the runner up the balance. Competition format would consist of various head-to-head knockouts, followed by an LCQ round.
At 16h00, ten Kooks arrived at the riders briefing, all hopeful of become shredding Gods, it was clear from their facial expressions that they were nervous, this being their first ever competition. What followed from this point was truly inspiring, this may have been a competition, but the comradery and sincere support from the riders for everyone to succeed captured the true essence of what this competition is about.
The day was filled with ten hopefuls pushing themselves to new limits, supported by their fellow competitors, with everyone being motivated by a common thread, a love of wakeboarding.
Spectators enjoyed massive falls, which is a common attribute of a ‘Kook’, and every now and then some solid runs worthy of shredding status. In the end there could on be one winner…
James took first place with StokeCity’s Perino taking second, followed by Dayne, and StokeCity Boss Man Kyle.
A big thanks to the guys who judged, and those who cheered the ‘Kooks’ on!
